Mythbusters - with Mariana Kneppers

This week the Tortoises welcome location producer and friend of the pod Mariana Kneppers to talk about the science megaseries Mythbusters. Along the way we discuss the cultural minefield of being an American living in the UK: the challenges of starting out in TV; and ask whether productions are becoming more risk averse. With thanks to Talesmith for hosting this episode.

Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

[00:00:00] Welcome to the Cockney episode of Who Moved the Tortoise?

[00:00:03] Who Moved the Tortoise?

[00:00:06] Mindless Wittering production

[00:00:11] All I knew was I wanted to try and understand the way the world works, the natural world

[00:00:25] More because we are human

[00:00:29] Science is the storytelling of our time

[00:00:34] For me, storytelling has always been the way to be solid

[00:00:43] Hello and welcome to Who Moved the Tortoise?

[00:00:46] A podcast about the science and wildlife films that have inspired people

[00:00:49] I'm Alex Hemingway

[00:00:51] And I'm Kate Dooley

[00:00:52] I love to just hear you guys talking like that

[00:00:59] Oh, that's so sweet

[00:01:00] I love it

[00:01:00] In each episode, we invite someone from the world of science or the media

[00:01:04] To share the thing that inspired them most

[00:01:07] It can be anything

[00:01:08] Fiction, comedy, documentary, animation, whatever

[00:01:12] The only rule at Tortoise HQ is that it has to have some kind of science or wildlife content

[00:01:17] This time, we're talking to location producer, Mariana Kneppers

[00:01:22] Mariana studied biology and environmental sciences at Elon University in North Carolina

[00:01:27] And then came to the UK to complete Imperial College's Masters in Science Communications

[00:01:32] She's worked as a researcher and assistant producer across a variety of science and wildlife projects

[00:01:38] For the Discovery Channel, National Geographic, Curiosity Stream and Love Nature

[00:01:42] She's moved through the ranks of human splasher for a macro studio shoot

[00:01:47] To human wave maker for a VFX tsunami sequence

[00:01:51] Mariana's choice for the film or TV show that inspired her

[00:01:54] Is a 2008 episode from the long-running Discovery series Mythbusters

[00:02:01] On this infectious episode of Mythbusters

[00:02:04] We glow the lid on those sensational viral videos

[00:02:09] Are you ready?

[00:02:10] I'm ready, let's do it

[00:02:11] Can you believe everything you see on the net?

[00:02:15] It's scientific!

[00:02:18] Like a sawdust cannon

[00:02:20] Say hello!

[00:02:23] Or a water-powered rocket car

[00:02:25] Ho, ho, ho, ho!

[00:02:28] Or even fainting goats

[00:02:30] We're gonna drop them with this one

[00:02:34] They don't just tell the myths

[00:02:38] They put them to the test

[00:02:47] We've put you on the spot and asked you for your inspiration

[00:02:50] How hard was it to pick something?

[00:02:53] Oh god, not difficult at all

[00:02:55] Like, it's so funny

[00:02:56] I would listen to so many episodes of this podcast

[00:02:59] I was like, I know exactly which show I would do

[00:03:01] Why Mythbusters?

[00:03:02] It was probably the first TV show that myself and my brothers were really obsessed with growing up

[00:03:10] I mean, we would watch it every week whenever there was a new, back in the TiVo days

[00:03:15] We'd always TiVo record them and watch them together on Saturday morning

[00:03:18] God, we just loved it

[00:03:19] It was the perfect balance of humour, science, and just chaos

[00:03:24] I just loved the chaos in it

[00:03:26] So much stuff goes wrong

[00:03:27] Yeah, it's such a good series

[00:03:29] I love it

[00:03:30] So this episode is from the sixth series

[00:03:32] It's the eleventh episode

[00:03:34] And it went out on September the 3rd, 2008

[00:03:38] Which made it, it was the 118th episode of Mythbusters

[00:03:41] How old were you?

[00:03:42] Where were you?

[00:03:43] What were you doing at this point?

[00:03:45] Yeah, let me do some quick maths

[00:03:48] I must have been, no, surely it couldn't have been 12

[00:03:50] Am I doing the math wrong?

[00:03:52] I don't know, you haven't told us any of the maths

[00:03:54] Yeah, yeah

[00:03:55] I was born in 1996

[00:03:57] It was 2008, really

[00:03:58] So I would have been, I would have been 12

[00:04:01] Yeah

[00:04:02] If you watched it then when it went out

[00:04:04] No, no, definitely, definitely

[00:04:05] Because we were following along with the season

[00:04:07] So I must have been 12

[00:04:08] That's so weird

[00:04:09] Because I just always imagined myself watching it as a teenager

[00:04:12] Which I did as well

[00:04:13] So, I mean, we know that you're quite international

[00:04:15] Yeah

[00:04:16] Very cosmopolitan

[00:04:17] Where were you at 12?

[00:04:20] I was in Walnut Creek, California

[00:04:22] Probably watching it on Saturday morning with my brothers

[00:04:25] It's actually, where we lived

[00:04:27] Was probably about 30 minutes away from where the studio was

[00:04:30] So it was really, what was so cool about watching the show

[00:04:33] Is you could recognise all the different points

[00:04:35] And I was like, oh, know where that is

[00:04:37] Oh, they're at the Alameda bomb range

[00:04:39] Didn't know they had a bomb range

[00:04:40] But I know where Alameda is

[00:04:41] So yeah, we would, you know, be watching it

[00:04:43] And it's kind of the same backdrop that they'd have

[00:04:46] In some of the scenes of kind of Mount Diablo in the background

[00:04:49] We have this kind of series of foothills that, you know

[00:04:51] In the East Bay area

[00:04:52] So you'd literally look out the window

[00:04:54] And then you'd see it on the screen

[00:04:55] And it was just, I don't know

[00:04:56] Made it feel so tangible and so close

[00:05:00] Jamie's picked out a fire training facility

[00:05:02] About 30 miles east of the city in Pleasanton

[00:05:07] Given that we're going to be harnessing hundreds

[00:05:09] Or maybe even thousands of horsepower of diesel pump energy

[00:05:13] And putting that through hoses

[00:05:16] This is kind of a dangerous situation

[00:05:18] That we don't really want to just dive into without preparation

[00:05:21] And so we're going to build a scale model

[00:05:24] See how well we can control it

[00:05:26] See if we can learn anything about it

[00:05:28] Before we start dealing with a big voice

[00:05:31] Did you love science at that point?

[00:05:33] Was it just the fact that your brothers loved it too

[00:05:35] And you could watch it with them?

[00:05:37] Honestly, we were a very science-y family

[00:05:39] Yeah, my brother, just for context

[00:05:42] My middle brother Andrew

[00:05:43] He's a mechanical engineer

[00:05:44] Works on Tesla vehicles

[00:05:46] And my oldest brother Thomas

[00:05:49] Is an environmental consultant, I would say

[00:05:52] He's a field biologist

[00:05:53] And so he literally wanders around

[00:05:55] Looking for snakes and tortoises

[00:05:56] Which is what he did growing up

[00:05:58] So, you know, it's funny to see how we all ended up

[00:06:01] But anyway, we were all very into science

[00:06:03] So, you know, to find a show that

[00:06:07] You know, it wasn't a matter of

[00:06:10] You know, one of us liked it

[00:06:11] And we all started watching

[00:06:12] It was just, we all gravitated to it

[00:06:14] Where did this sort of family love of science come from?

[00:06:16] Is this from your parents or?

[00:06:18] That's a really good question

[00:06:19] I don't know

[00:06:19] I mean, my dad was in engineering

[00:06:21] He's still in engineering

[00:06:22] My mom is just kind of a very curious person

[00:06:26] You know, she always talks about how

[00:06:28] Like my oldest brother is super into snakes

[00:06:30] Super into reptiles

[00:06:31] Little young pathologist

[00:06:32] And my mom talked to me about how

[00:06:38] When Thomas first started showing those kind of tendencies

[00:06:40] She was terrified because she hated snakes

[00:06:42] She was like, well, I just have to, you know

[00:06:44] Get used to it

[00:06:45] And kind of grin and bear it

[00:06:47] And learn to love these things

[00:06:48] And so I think, yeah

[00:06:50] She's always had an open mind

[00:06:51] I think that kind of inspired us

[00:06:53] To just keep our minds open

[00:06:55] And get into weird and wacky things in the world

[00:06:58] And I think a lot of that comes from science

[00:07:00] Do you think school and what's on TV is helping

[00:07:03] You develop that curiosity

[00:07:06] And be excited by science?

[00:07:08] Did this show help that?

[00:07:10] Definitely

[00:07:11] Definitely

[00:07:11] Because it just made it feel more accessible

[00:07:13] You know, it's

[00:07:15] Growing up, when you imagine a scientist

[00:07:17] You think of somebody in a lab with a bunch of beakers

[00:07:19] You think of a chemist, really

[00:07:20] This was like a group of five pretty normal people

[00:07:25] Very, well, not normal

[00:07:27] Really quirky

[00:07:27] And fucking weird at times

[00:07:29] But like, in the best way possible

[00:07:31] And it just, the enthusiasm

[00:07:33] They were all such enthusiastic characters

[00:07:35] I mean, whoever casted it really

[00:07:38] Smashed the nail on the head

[00:07:39] Because it, you know

[00:07:41] It's that infectious enthusiasm

[00:07:42] Really just draws you in

[00:07:44] And when you're 8, 9, 10, 12

[00:07:46] Up to, what, I'm 28 now

[00:07:48] And I still am obsessed with it

[00:07:49] I mean, it's

[00:07:50] They just take you along for this weird, wonderful ride

[00:07:55] Well, it looks like we've got a bunch of fire hoses

[00:07:58] Pointed down

[00:07:59] And they're lifting a car off the ground

[00:08:01] That is freaking perfect for us

[00:08:04] It looks pretty convincing

[00:08:05] What do you think?

[00:08:07] No idea

[00:08:07] Here, play it again

[00:08:09] You know, if this is real

[00:08:10] And we can actually pull this off

[00:08:13] It's going to be awesome

[00:08:14] I totally agree

[00:08:16] But man, it could also be deadly

[00:08:18] It could also be a con job

[00:08:21] That car might just be a plastic shell

[00:08:24] But the only way to find out

[00:08:26] Is to try it ourselves

[00:08:28] That means building a platform

[00:08:30] Sweet-talking some firemen

[00:08:32] And buying a full-weight has-been hatchback

[00:08:35] This is what it is to be a Mythbuster

[00:08:37] You see this car behind me

[00:08:38] And you think

[00:08:39] Ah, it's some classified ad piece of crap

[00:08:41] I see a flying water jam car

[00:08:44] We talked about Bango's The Theory

[00:08:46] On this podcast before

[00:08:47] Which is in a similar-ish vein

[00:08:49] Obviously more recent

[00:08:49] But the conclusion we came to

[00:08:51] When we talked about that

[00:08:52] Was that casting is everything

[00:08:53] And you can really see it

[00:08:54] With Mythbusters as well

[00:08:56] That it lives or dies on the casting

[00:08:58] Doesn't it?

[00:08:59] Absolutely

[00:08:59] And there's not many shows

[00:09:01] Where you can get two middle-aged men

[00:09:02] Who otherwise seem quite normal

[00:09:04] And they're really experimenting

[00:09:06] They really try and use

[00:09:08] The scientific method

[00:09:09] To try things out

[00:09:10] And you really see

[00:09:11] They're working out

[00:09:12] On and off screen

[00:09:14] There aren't many shows

[00:09:16] That have managed to

[00:09:17] So successfully do that

[00:09:19] With like two middle-aged men

[00:09:20] And now it's on

[00:09:21] It has been cancelled in 2016

[00:09:23] But you can pretty much

[00:09:24] Find it on a schedule anywhere

[00:09:26] Probably almost anywhere in the world

[00:09:27] As you say, Mariana

[00:09:29] They hit the nail on the head

[00:09:31] Right people

[00:09:31] Right format

[00:09:32] They did it so well

[00:09:34] Yeah and they have

[00:09:35] Even now

[00:09:36] I mean I was watching it

[00:09:37] The other day

[00:09:37] Amazon Prime has a channel

[00:09:38] Like a live TV channel

[00:09:39] That just streams Mythbusters

[00:09:41] 24 hours a day

[00:09:42] Which I discovered

[00:09:43] I think this year in March

[00:09:45] And I haven't stopped watching it

[00:09:46] It's so good

[00:09:47] I love it

[00:09:48] I mean that does suggest to me

[00:09:49] That there is

[00:09:50] There must still be an audience for it

[00:09:52] Which kind of raises the question

[00:09:53] As to why

[00:09:53] It's not been updated

[00:09:54] For the modern era

[00:09:56] Because I really enjoyed

[00:09:57] Rewatching it

[00:09:58] But it did strike me

[00:09:59] As quite

[00:09:59] In a sense of

[00:10:00] Quite of its time

[00:10:01] Because it felt like

[00:10:02] There were a lot of

[00:10:03] Copycat type shows

[00:10:04] Certainly in the UK

[00:10:05] Around about the same time

[00:10:07] So I'm thinking about

[00:10:07] Things like Brainiac

[00:10:08] Which was Sky

[00:10:09] I think

[00:10:10] There was

[00:10:11] Basically the first science series

[00:10:13] I ever worked on

[00:10:13] Was a thing called

[00:10:14] Mad Labs for National Geographic

[00:10:15] Which is still one of the best

[00:10:16] Jobs I've ever done

[00:10:17] It's pretty much

[00:10:18] A carbon copy of Mythbusters

[00:10:20] But without presenters

[00:10:22] It was narration led

[00:10:23] And it felt like

[00:10:24] There was an explosion

[00:10:24] In this sort of

[00:10:25] Popular science

[00:10:26] In the sort of

[00:10:27] Early 2000s

[00:10:28] That we've never sort of

[00:10:29] Quite seen the same of since

[00:10:31] Yeah

[00:10:32] You're right

[00:10:32] We haven't seen the same of

[00:10:33] Which is a shame

[00:10:34] Because it's just brilliant

[00:10:36] It's the epitome

[00:10:37] Of popular science

[00:10:38] It's exciting

[00:10:39] And it's proper science

[00:10:41] And it's so watchable

[00:10:43] And fun

[00:10:44] And silly

[00:10:45] And there's something

[00:10:46] For everyone in there

[00:10:47] It's a real family show

[00:10:48] So it can

[00:10:49] It's been really interesting

[00:10:50] For kids

[00:10:50] But I think as adults

[00:10:51] Watching it as well

[00:10:53] It's super fun

[00:10:55] That's not invisible water

[00:10:57] That's some kind of

[00:10:58] A super dense gas

[00:10:59] There are all sorts

[00:11:00] Of them out there

[00:11:01] We just gotta find out

[00:11:02] Which one

[00:11:03] The prime suspect

[00:11:04] Is sulfur hexafluoride

[00:11:06] It's five times

[00:11:08] Heavier than air

[00:11:09] I promise to show you

[00:11:11] Something really cool

[00:11:11] As long as you promise

[00:11:12] Not to try it at home

[00:11:13] Okay?

[00:11:15] Okay

[00:11:15] Now everyone wants to know

[00:11:16] Why my voice sounds higher

[00:11:18] When I inhale helium

[00:11:19] My simple fact is

[00:11:21] Is that helium

[00:11:21] Is six times less dense

[00:11:22] Than air

[00:11:23] Which means sound waves

[00:11:23] Travel through it much faster

[00:11:25] Which makes my voice

[00:11:26] Sound much higher

[00:11:27] Now

[00:11:27] The same effect

[00:11:28] Can be achieved in reverse

[00:11:29] If I inhale something like

[00:11:33] Sulfur hexafluoride

[00:11:34] Which is six times

[00:11:35] Denser than air

[00:11:36] I inhale some of that

[00:11:37] And my voice gets really low

[00:11:39] Although somehow

[00:11:41] I'm still funny

[00:11:42] It's scientific

[00:11:44] Ha ha ha ha

[00:11:48] It ended in 2016

[00:11:49] There's various things

[00:11:51] You read about

[00:11:51] But actually

[00:11:52] Adam Savage's

[00:11:54] Tested YouTube channel

[00:11:55] He talks about it

[00:11:57] And his YouTube channel

[00:11:58] Is actually really good

[00:11:59] If you haven't checked it out

[00:12:00] And you like the show

[00:12:01] Because he talks a lot

[00:12:02] About what they did

[00:12:03] And how they did it

[00:12:04] So the ratings

[00:12:05] Were starting to go down

[00:12:07] And they wanted to

[00:12:08] End it on their terms

[00:12:09] So I think a few series

[00:12:12] Before they'd taken out

[00:12:13] The three extra presenters

[00:12:15] Yeah

[00:12:15] Potentially due to

[00:12:17] Not wanting to pay

[00:12:19] For their wages

[00:12:20] And they couldn't agree

[00:12:21] On the kind of

[00:12:22] The wage discussions

[00:12:24] So then it was just

[00:12:25] The two lead presenters

[00:12:26] And they kind of

[00:12:28] Maybe didn't get on

[00:12:29] As well as

[00:12:30] They seemed to

[00:12:32] On camera

[00:12:32] Oh that's interesting

[00:12:33] So I think

[00:12:34] There was a whole thing

[00:12:35] About well actually

[00:12:36] Maybe let's end it now

[00:12:37] We've had a really good run

[00:12:38] Let's do it on our own terms

[00:12:40] Rather than being cut

[00:12:41] By the channels

[00:12:42] But I don't know

[00:12:43] How much of that

[00:12:44] Is them

[00:12:45] Trying to take back

[00:12:46] The narrative

[00:12:47] And control the narrative

[00:12:47] Themselves

[00:12:48] Who knows

[00:12:49] I do wonder if

[00:12:51] The

[00:12:52] Whenever I watch the show

[00:12:53] I think of this

[00:12:54] I wonder if the

[00:12:55] Age of insurance

[00:12:56] And risk assessments

[00:12:58] And what not

[00:12:59] Probably affected it

[00:12:59] Because my god

[00:13:01] The stuff they got away

[00:13:02] With on that show

[00:13:03] I mean even the episode

[00:13:04] That we're talking about today

[00:13:05] There's like

[00:13:06] At the end

[00:13:07] They do this

[00:13:08] You know

[00:13:08] Sawdust cannon

[00:13:09] In three

[00:13:10] Two

[00:13:11] One

[00:13:26] I mean it's a cannon

[00:13:27] That shoots like

[00:13:28] A load of sawdust

[00:13:29] Into the sky

[00:13:30] And they put

[00:13:30] A flare in the middle

[00:13:32] And that flare

[00:13:33] Once it's shot off

[00:13:34] Ignites

[00:13:35] You know

[00:13:35] This massive fireball

[00:13:37] And it was all sparked

[00:13:38] By this viral video

[00:13:39] The whole episode's

[00:13:41] Based off like

[00:13:41] Viral videos

[00:13:42] And that's one of them

[00:13:43] They test

[00:13:43] And you know

[00:13:44] So they test it

[00:13:45] They say

[00:13:46] Myth confirmed

[00:13:46] Wow that's amazing

[00:13:47] Now let's supersize it

[00:13:48] Let's ramp it up

[00:13:49] And they go for

[00:13:51] Coffee cream

[00:13:52] Instead of sawdust

[00:13:53] Which is highly

[00:13:54] Flammable

[00:13:54] And they set this thing off

[00:13:57] And the fireball

[00:13:58] That it makes

[00:13:59] Is unfathomable

[00:14:01] They keep saying

[00:14:02] You know

[00:14:02] The governor

[00:14:03] Must be seeing this

[00:14:04] From Sacramento

[00:14:04] This is so big

[00:14:05] And the footage

[00:14:07] That they have

[00:14:08] Of Cary Grant and Toy

[00:14:09] Reacting to it

[00:14:10] Is hilarious

[00:14:11] But also so raw

[00:14:13] Because they're literally

[00:14:14] Watching this thing

[00:14:15] As it gets bigger

[00:14:16] They kind of start

[00:14:16] Backing up

[00:14:17] And they just

[00:14:18] I think Cary

[00:14:19] At one point

[00:14:19] Turns around

[00:14:19] And just sprints

[00:14:20] For the hills

[00:14:20] She tries to run

[00:14:21] It's really interesting

[00:14:22] Seeing how people react

[00:14:23] It's like when you're

[00:14:24] On a roller coaster

[00:14:24] Are you the kind of

[00:14:25] Person that goes

[00:14:26] Yeah

[00:14:26] Or you're the person

[00:14:27] That goes

[00:14:29] I'm the person

[00:14:30] That goes

[00:14:30] And the boys

[00:14:31] Were just like

[00:14:32] Yeah

[00:14:32] It was like

[00:14:34] The perfect example

[00:14:35] Of seeing people's

[00:14:37] Like fight or flight

[00:14:37] Mechanism

[00:14:38] Like in that moment

[00:14:39] You just saw

[00:14:39] Like three personality

[00:14:41] Types

[00:14:41] Just at once

[00:14:44] Terrifying

[00:14:46] Did you get that

[00:14:47] On high speed

[00:14:48] Yeah

[00:14:48] We did remember

[00:14:50] To push the on button

[00:14:51] On the off chance

[00:14:52] That this might be

[00:14:53] One of the biggest

[00:14:54] Fireballs ever

[00:14:57] This was frightening

[00:14:58] I mean seriously

[00:14:59] There was a moment

[00:15:00] Where I'm like

[00:15:02] Oh crap

[00:15:03] This was a bad

[00:15:04] Bad idea

[00:15:04] All I heard in my head

[00:15:05] Was run

[00:15:06] And I started up the hill

[00:15:09] As fast as I could go

[00:15:10] And I'm still

[00:15:11] On a little bit of

[00:15:12] Adrenaline buzz

[00:15:13] Right now

[00:15:13] They talk about it

[00:15:14] Afterwards

[00:15:15] So like this

[00:15:15] We need to destroy this

[00:15:17] Like nobody should

[00:15:18] Have this technology

[00:15:19] I mean looking at that

[00:15:21] Now

[00:15:22] I mean even on the

[00:15:23] Shows that I've worked on

[00:15:24] Like doing something

[00:15:24] As simple as

[00:15:25] You know

[00:15:25] Going

[00:15:26] Well not simple

[00:15:27] But going for a

[00:15:28] Shark cage dive

[00:15:29] With people who have

[00:15:30] Been doing this

[00:15:31] Their whole life

[00:15:31] You know

[00:15:32] Really reputable

[00:15:33] Scientists

[00:15:34] Who are

[00:15:34] Know the animals

[00:15:35] They've done this before

[00:15:36] And they've dived out

[00:15:37] Of the cage with sharks

[00:15:38] Even just trying to get

[00:15:39] Approval to do

[00:15:39] Cage diving itself

[00:15:40] Is so tough

[00:15:42] With insurers

[00:15:43] And it really baffles me

[00:15:44] To try and do

[00:15:45] Something like that

[00:15:46] Set a fireball

[00:15:47] You know

[00:15:48] On TV

[00:15:48] Would just

[00:15:50] Have to have

[00:15:51] So many legal

[00:15:52] Hoops to jump through

[00:15:53] Nowadays

[00:15:53] I mean we've both

[00:15:54] Been doing this

[00:15:55] Longer than you have

[00:15:56] That I'm afraid to say

[00:15:58] That's fair

[00:15:59] Come on

[00:15:59] Yes

[00:16:00] Come on stay with me

[00:16:01] I have got a point

[00:16:02] To make here

[00:16:02] And we've actually

[00:16:03] Also both worked on

[00:16:05] This type of

[00:16:06] Series before

[00:16:07] And I do think

[00:16:09] That you know

[00:16:09] I'm not saying

[00:16:10] On the stuff

[00:16:10] The stuff I did

[00:16:11] That sort of

[00:16:12] Mad Lab series

[00:16:12] Is practically

[00:16:13] 20 years ago

[00:16:14] Now I think

[00:16:14] It was 2005

[00:16:15] You know

[00:16:16] And we did

[00:16:16] Similarly cool stuff

[00:16:18] In my experience

[00:16:19] You know

[00:16:19] I don't think

[00:16:20] We necessarily

[00:16:21] Took unnecessary

[00:16:22] Risks

[00:16:22] But I would say

[00:16:23] That the landscape

[00:16:24] Of risk taking

[00:16:25] And risk assessment

[00:16:27] And insurance

[00:16:27] Has tightened up

[00:16:29] In that time period

[00:16:30] But also

[00:16:31] The production company

[00:16:32] Was an Australian

[00:16:33] Production company

[00:16:34] But they filmed

[00:16:34] In California

[00:16:35] So I don't know

[00:16:37] If that helped

[00:16:37] Or hindered them

[00:16:38] I have to say

[00:16:39] That was one of

[00:16:39] The biggest surprises

[00:16:40] For me

[00:16:40] Because I've always

[00:16:41] Thought of Mythbusters

[00:16:42] As this sort of

[00:16:43] Quintessentially

[00:16:43] American series

[00:16:45] And I didn't know

[00:16:46] It was an

[00:16:47] Essentially

[00:16:48] An Australian

[00:16:48] Production

[00:16:49] That was shot

[00:16:50] And crewed

[00:16:51] And hosted

[00:16:51] Largely in America

[00:16:53] And they do

[00:16:55] Appear on camera

[00:16:56] Very careful

[00:16:57] About things

[00:16:58] They do say

[00:16:59] So many times

[00:17:00] Don't try this at home

[00:17:01] They talk very

[00:17:02] Honestly about

[00:17:03] The precautions

[00:17:04] Involved in things

[00:17:05] So I think

[00:17:07] They approached

[00:17:08] That very well

[00:17:08] Because otherwise

[00:17:09] You could get

[00:17:11] Some really nasty

[00:17:12] Copycats

[00:17:13] And people trying

[00:17:13] To do things

[00:17:14] And then put it

[00:17:15] On YouTube

[00:17:15] And stuff like that

[00:17:16] And when you're

[00:17:17] Aiming for a family

[00:17:18] And kids audience

[00:17:18] You have to be

[00:17:19] Very careful

[00:17:20] But I thought

[00:17:20] They did it

[00:17:21] In a really good way

[00:17:21] There was a lot

[00:17:22] Of trust

[00:17:23] With the audience

[00:17:23] As well

[00:17:24] Because they tested

[00:17:24] So many different

[00:17:25] Myths

[00:17:25] That you know

[00:17:26] There was one

[00:17:26] They did like

[00:17:27] Paper crossbow

[00:17:28] Which you know

[00:17:28] A prisoner had

[00:17:30] Fashioned a crossbow

[00:17:32] Out of newspaper

[00:17:33] And the tip

[00:17:34] I think

[00:17:34] Was made out of

[00:17:35] You know

[00:17:36] One of those

[00:17:36] Like plastic lunch trays

[00:17:37] I mean

[00:17:38] It was basically

[00:17:39] All materials

[00:17:39] That you would have

[00:17:40] As a prisoner

[00:17:40] And managed to

[00:17:41] Shoot and kill

[00:17:42] A guard

[00:17:43] From across the hall

[00:17:44] I don't know

[00:17:45] What the distance was

[00:17:45] But it was something mental

[00:17:46] And they tested that

[00:17:47] And I think

[00:17:48] One of the iterations

[00:17:49] That they made

[00:17:50] Did end up

[00:17:51] Putting like

[00:17:52] A dart

[00:17:52] About an inch

[00:17:53] Into

[00:17:54] Kind of the dummy's

[00:17:55] Neck that they made

[00:17:56] The kind of

[00:17:56] Ballistic style dummy

[00:17:58] And they were like

[00:17:58] Oh my god

[00:18:02] They're not explicitly

[00:18:04] Showing every single

[00:18:05] Step of making it

[00:18:06] But you could kind of

[00:18:07] Piece it together

[00:18:08] If you had

[00:18:09] You know

[00:18:09] An engineering

[00:18:10] Type mind

[00:18:11] And I just

[00:18:12] Watch back

[00:18:13] Some of those episodes

[00:18:13] And think

[00:18:14] God what

[00:18:15] Would it be different

[00:18:16] Today if somebody

[00:18:17] Saw it

[00:18:17] You know

[00:18:18] Would there be

[00:18:18] More copycats

[00:18:19] But you don't

[00:18:19] Really hear anything

[00:18:20] In the news

[00:18:21] Or

[00:18:22] I don't know

[00:18:23] If that's just

[00:18:23] The trust they put

[00:18:24] In the audience

[00:18:24] I think they've got

[00:18:25] Like kind of

[00:18:25] Two audiences

[00:18:27] In a way

[00:18:27] The people who

[00:18:28] Watched it

[00:18:29] And loved it

[00:18:30] And then they've

[00:18:30] Got the real fans

[00:18:31] They

[00:18:32] I think they were

[00:18:32] One of the early shows

[00:18:33] Who really went online

[00:18:35] With their presence

[00:18:36] And really engaged

[00:18:37] The audience

[00:18:38] And asked them

[00:18:39] What they wanted to see

[00:18:40] Which is really clever

[00:18:41] Right

[00:18:41] Getting them to

[00:18:42] Send in the myths

[00:18:43] Because by that

[00:18:44] Many episodes in

[00:18:45] And how many

[00:18:46] It was something like

[00:18:47] Two and a half thousand

[00:18:49] Experiments or something

[00:18:50] They did

[00:18:50] You kind of need help

[00:18:52] Finding new experiments

[00:18:53] To try

[00:18:53] It is worth reading

[00:18:55] The Wikipedia entry

[00:18:56] For kind of some of the

[00:18:57] Accidents and incidents

[00:18:58] They have

[00:18:59] Some of them are

[00:19:00] Sort of scraping

[00:19:01] Quite close to the line of

[00:19:02] This is a production

[00:19:03] That may well get shut down

[00:19:05] I think the most notable

[00:19:06] Of which is a cannonball

[00:19:07] That ended up

[00:19:08] Leaving the range

[00:19:09] At which they were

[00:19:10] Operating it entirely

[00:19:11] And embedding itself

[00:19:12] In someone's house

[00:19:14] Ouch

[00:19:14] So they

[00:19:15] It flew close to the wind

[00:19:17] Yeah

[00:19:17] But I mean maybe

[00:19:18] For two and a half thousand

[00:19:19] Experiments

[00:19:19] That's not

[00:19:20] That's not too bad

[00:19:21] Is it

[00:19:21] No I suppose not

[00:19:23] God

[00:19:24] It's just

[00:19:24] It's a miracle

[00:19:25] That more

[00:19:26] They wouldn't be able

[00:19:26] To get away with that today

[00:19:28] Definitely not

[00:19:29] You know I watch these shows

[00:19:30] Being like

[00:19:30] Gosh I'm so

[00:19:32] Kind of jealous

[00:19:33] Not that you know

[00:19:34] I don't want anybody

[00:19:35] To get hurt obviously

[00:19:35] But there is a sense of

[00:19:37] You know kind of

[00:19:38] Cowboy science going on

[00:19:39] There's a sense of

[00:19:40] You know there was a bit

[00:19:41] Of reckless abandon in it

[00:19:42] That you know

[00:19:43] That chaos that

[00:19:44] You just don't get

[00:19:46] Now on TV

[00:19:46] And I think that's what

[00:19:47] Made the show feel

[00:19:48] So authentic

[00:19:49] Because it was like

[00:19:50] We have no idea

[00:19:51] What's going to happen

[00:19:52] And sometimes things

[00:19:53] Did go a bit hectic

[00:19:55] I don't know

[00:19:55] I do wish that I had

[00:19:56] Been working on that show

[00:19:58] I think it would have

[00:19:59] Been such good fun

[00:20:02] So Carrie and Tori

[00:20:03] Hit the road

[00:20:04] To confirm

[00:20:05] Or confound

[00:20:06] This possible fraud

[00:20:08] Once and for all

[00:20:10] Alright we're at

[00:20:10] Renegade Ranch

[00:20:11] To see these

[00:20:12] Fainting goats

[00:20:12] I mean I haven't seen

[00:20:13] One fall over yet

[00:20:14] So I'm just kind of

[00:20:15] Excited to get in there

[00:20:16] And try to freak them out

[00:20:17] And see if we can

[00:20:17] Get them to fall over

[00:20:18] I know that seems

[00:20:19] Kind of cruel

[00:20:20] But you know

[00:20:21] Science can be cruel

[00:20:22] Sometimes

[00:20:22] I have seen this

[00:20:24] Internet clip so many

[00:20:25] Times because it

[00:20:26] Cracks me up

[00:20:27] Do goats actually

[00:20:28] Faint?

[00:20:29] Well they do

[00:20:30] And they don't

[00:20:31] They appear to faint

[00:20:33] But they don't

[00:20:34] Actually lose consciousness

[00:20:35] When they fall on the

[00:20:36] Ground

[00:20:36] It's a muscle condition

[00:20:38] Called myotonia

[00:20:39] That affects their

[00:20:40] Leg muscles

[00:20:41] So when they get scared

[00:20:42] Sometimes even excited

[00:20:43] Their muscles are

[00:20:44] Tighten up in their

[00:20:45] Legs and sometimes

[00:20:46] They'll actually fall over

[00:20:48] Alright Tori

[00:20:49] Your first step

[00:20:50] What do you want to do?

[00:20:50] I think for my first one

[00:20:52] I'm just going to see

[00:20:52] If I can get one of

[00:20:53] These goats to faint

[00:20:54] With no tricks

[00:20:55] I mean I haven't seen

[00:20:56] One of these fainted yet

[00:21:00] It's a shameful start

[00:21:02] The first one to faint

[00:21:03] Is one of us

[00:21:04] One thing that we

[00:21:06] Have talked about

[00:21:07] Before on the podcast

[00:21:08] Particularly in relation

[00:21:09] To shows like this

[00:21:10] That have inspired people

[00:21:12] At this sort of

[00:21:13] Particular time of their life

[00:21:14] You know early teens

[00:21:15] The idea that

[00:21:16] They present science

[00:21:18] In a way which is

[00:21:18] Much more engaging

[00:21:19] Than we got in the classroom

[00:21:22] And I'm just quite

[00:21:22] Interested to know

[00:21:23] What did a scientific

[00:21:25] Education look like

[00:21:26] In an American classroom

[00:21:28] At that sort of age?

[00:21:30] I was always very

[00:21:31] Science minded anyway

[00:21:32] So I sought out

[00:21:33] All the kind of

[00:21:34] Science classes

[00:21:34] That I could take

[00:21:35] So once I got to

[00:21:36] High school

[00:21:36] You can kind of

[00:21:38] I don't know if it's

[00:21:38] The same here

[00:21:39] But you can kind of

[00:21:39] Choose your classes

[00:21:41] That you want to take

[00:21:42] So you know

[00:21:43] There are some core ones

[00:21:44] You have to take

[00:21:44] Like you have to take

[00:21:45] An English class

[00:21:46] You have to take

[00:21:46] A history class

[00:21:47] And you have to do

[00:21:48] A certain number

[00:21:49] Of science classes

[00:21:50] By the time you graduate

[00:21:51] But I kind of

[00:21:52] Loaded up on all

[00:21:53] The science ones

[00:21:54] And my school was

[00:21:55] Really good

[00:21:55] Because they had

[00:21:57] Some kind of extra ones

[00:21:58] That other schools

[00:21:59] Might not have

[00:21:59] Like there was

[00:22:00] Vet science

[00:22:01] I took that

[00:22:01] And absolutely loved it

[00:22:02] We had physiology

[00:22:03] We had sports science

[00:22:05] That's amazing

[00:22:06] So how did you hear

[00:22:08] About the UK

[00:22:10] Imperial science comms course

[00:22:12] And why did you think

[00:22:13] Yeah sure I can go

[00:22:14] To the UK

[00:22:15] And study this

[00:22:16] Yeah

[00:22:16] It's kind of

[00:22:17] A two part question

[00:22:18] To be honest

[00:22:19] Because I think

[00:22:21] First of all

[00:22:22] Travelling was just

[00:22:22] Never something

[00:22:23] That fazed me

[00:22:24] I think having

[00:22:25] Two parents

[00:22:25] That are from

[00:22:26] Outside of the US

[00:22:27] I mean my dad

[00:22:28] Is from South Africa

[00:22:29] My mum is from Portugal

[00:22:30] They both left

[00:22:31] You know their

[00:22:32] Respective countries

[00:22:33] Really young

[00:22:33] My dad built a boat

[00:22:35] And sailed it

[00:22:36] Basically to the US

[00:22:37] From South Africa

[00:22:38] It's a very long

[00:22:39] Convoluted story

[00:22:40] But so they're

[00:22:41] There always has been

[00:22:42] That sense of

[00:22:43] You know wanting

[00:22:44] To go places

[00:22:44] Live in new places

[00:22:46] We were always

[00:22:46] Really inspired

[00:22:47] By our parents

[00:22:48] To go out

[00:22:48] And explore the world

[00:22:49] So that didn't

[00:22:50] Faze me as much

[00:22:51] I was really

[00:22:53] Really academic

[00:22:54] Especially in

[00:22:55] University

[00:22:56] And I had

[00:22:57] Actually applied

[00:22:58] For a scholarship

[00:22:59] To fund some research

[00:23:01] That I was doing

[00:23:01] Essentially through

[00:23:02] You know winning

[00:23:03] This kind of

[00:23:04] Scholarship

[00:23:05] For my research

[00:23:06] It put me

[00:23:06] In a good position

[00:23:07] To apply for things

[00:23:08] Like road scholarships

[00:23:09] Marshall scholarships

[00:23:10] These kind of

[00:23:11] Big international fellowships

[00:23:13] That would have you

[00:23:13] Studying in other countries

[00:23:15] Like Fulbright

[00:23:15] I think was the other

[00:23:16] One I applied for

[00:23:16] And as part of that

[00:23:18] Had you look at

[00:23:19] You know doing

[00:23:20] A master's while

[00:23:21] You're abroad

[00:23:22] And then coupling

[00:23:23] It with research

[00:23:23] So I was kind of

[00:23:25] Looking at different

[00:23:26] Master's programs

[00:23:27] Around the world

[00:23:28] And working with

[00:23:29] The fellowships office

[00:23:30] At Elon

[00:23:30] Which are just

[00:23:31] A bunch of

[00:23:32] Really really

[00:23:32] Supportive people

[00:23:33] They're like

[00:23:33] Why don't you

[00:23:34] Look in England

[00:23:34] I was like

[00:23:35] Oh England's

[00:23:36] A bit boring

[00:23:36] Like they all

[00:23:37] Speak English

[00:23:38] Hang on

[00:23:39] Right let's just

[00:23:40] Stop there

[00:23:41] That's it

[00:23:42] Press stop

[00:23:43] As in I was like

[00:23:44] Oh you know

[00:23:45] Everybody speaks

[00:23:45] English already

[00:23:46] Like you know

[00:23:46] Maybe that's too easy

[00:23:47] Maybe I need to

[00:23:48] Try something different

[00:23:48] But I ended up

[00:23:51] Finding the science

[00:23:51] Communication course

[00:23:52] And I always loved

[00:23:53] Science television

[00:23:55] And I always wanted

[00:23:56] To get involved in it

[00:23:57] But and I knew

[00:23:58] My future career

[00:23:59] Was going to be in science

[00:24:00] But I kind of

[00:24:00] Had ruled out TV

[00:24:01] Because I was like

[00:24:02] How do you get into it

[00:24:03] You have to know someone

[00:24:04] I don't have the skill set

[00:24:05] For that

[00:24:06] I'll just go do a PhD

[00:24:07] Which is never a thought

[00:24:08] You should have

[00:24:09] Going into a PhD

[00:24:10] Mind you

[00:24:10] If you want to do a PhD

[00:24:12] Really want to do it

[00:24:13] Don't be like me

[00:24:14] But um

[00:24:16] Fortunately

[00:24:16] Before I went too far

[00:24:17] Down that road

[00:24:18] I found this

[00:24:18] Master's course

[00:24:19] I was like

[00:24:19] Well maybe this

[00:24:21] It's a good way

[00:24:21] Of going and living abroad

[00:24:22] Somewhere for a year

[00:24:23] And it's a good way

[00:24:24] Of you know

[00:24:26] Seeing if I can

[00:24:27] Give this a proper go

[00:24:30] So I applied

[00:24:31] I got in

[00:24:32] Didn't get any

[00:24:33] Of the scholarships

[00:24:33] That I applied for

[00:24:35] But I was like

[00:24:36] Well I got accepted

[00:24:37] As a program

[00:24:37] So I might as well

[00:24:38] Go now

[00:24:40] And went

[00:24:40] And loved it

[00:24:41] So at that point

[00:24:43] Have you visited

[00:24:43] The UK before

[00:24:44] Or

[00:24:44] I mean we got to

[00:24:45] Travel quite a bit

[00:24:46] Growing up

[00:24:47] Especially because

[00:24:47] We would go to

[00:24:48] Portugal every summer

[00:24:49] To see my mum's

[00:24:49] Side of the family

[00:24:50] Oftentimes we'd

[00:24:51] Tack on kind of

[00:24:52] Side trips

[00:24:52] And one summer

[00:24:53] We came to London

[00:24:54] And absolutely loved it

[00:24:55] But I think moving

[00:24:57] To the UK

[00:24:58] You know

[00:24:59] I was like

[00:25:01] But there's actually

[00:25:02] A lot more cultural

[00:25:03] Differences than I realised

[00:25:04] And yeah

[00:25:06] It's funny

[00:25:06] Even now

[00:25:07] What four years in

[00:25:08] I still find day to day

[00:25:10] Every now and again

[00:25:11] Something surprises me

[00:25:11] So what are us Brits

[00:25:13] Like then

[00:25:13] What is it like

[00:25:14] Being here

[00:25:14] And working here

[00:25:15] What was most surprising

[00:25:17] Oh gosh

[00:25:19] A lot of things

[00:25:20] But the thing that

[00:25:21] Comes to mind

[00:25:21] Is you know

[00:25:22] I think Americans

[00:25:23] Have kind of a tendency

[00:25:25] To overshare

[00:25:26] Or just kind of

[00:25:27] You know

[00:25:27] If somebody asks you

[00:25:28] Oh yeah

[00:25:29] How are you doing

[00:25:29] In America

[00:25:30] People will be like

[00:25:31] They'll tell you

[00:25:32] They'll be like

[00:25:32] Oh my day's

[00:25:33] Pretty rough today

[00:25:34] Or oh my day's amazing

[00:25:35] I went to the gym

[00:25:35] And I did

[00:25:36] You know

[00:25:37] People just

[00:25:38] Go off at you

[00:25:39] And just chat

[00:25:40] For days

[00:25:40] Whereas in the UK

[00:25:42] You'll come into the office

[00:25:42] You'll be like

[00:25:43] Oh how was your weekend

[00:25:43] People will be like

[00:25:44] You're fine

[00:25:45] Yeah that's because

[00:25:46] We work in London

[00:25:47] So you came for the Masters

[00:25:48] You've stayed

[00:25:50] And we've recently

[00:25:51] Worked together

[00:25:51] We've all worked together

[00:25:53] Why did you stay?

[00:25:54] Not for the weather

[00:25:56] Definitely not for the weather

[00:25:57] I struggle with that so much

[00:25:59] It's the one thing

[00:26:00] I would change

[00:26:00] But no

[00:26:01] I stayed because

[00:26:02] I just

[00:26:02] I really really liked it

[00:26:04] And I mean

[00:26:04] There's the obvious answer

[00:26:06] Of a lot of TV workers here

[00:26:07] And it's very centralized

[00:26:08] And you know

[00:26:09] It is cool to be

[00:26:10] In that atmosphere

[00:26:11] Where you know

[00:26:12] Being in Oxford Circus

[00:26:13] For example

[00:26:13] There are TV companies everywhere

[00:26:14] And you bump into people

[00:26:16] You've worked with

[00:26:16] And you know

[00:26:17] It's quite exciting

[00:26:18] But sense of humor

[00:26:19] Is very different here

[00:26:21] Than compared to the US

[00:26:22] And I find

[00:26:23] Growing up

[00:26:24] I mean

[00:26:24] Obviously my dad

[00:26:25] Had a very South African

[00:26:26] Sense of humor

[00:26:27] And you know

[00:26:27] Four year old Mariana

[00:26:28] Would go to her

[00:26:29] Elementary school

[00:26:30] And tell a really

[00:26:31] Kind of problematic joke

[00:26:33] Or kind of offensive

[00:26:35] And I'd get sent home

[00:26:36] And my parents

[00:26:37] Would have to

[00:26:37] You know

[00:26:38] Talk to the teachers

[00:26:38] And my dad

[00:26:40] Would have to be like

[00:26:40] You can't repeat

[00:26:41] What you're saying

[00:26:41] At home and at school

[00:26:43] Anyway

[00:26:43] Whereas here

[00:26:44] You know

[00:26:44] For the most part

[00:26:45] I find it's more

[00:26:46] Of a vehicle

[00:26:46] To have conversations here

[00:26:49] And humor becomes

[00:26:50] The thing

[00:26:51] To talk about things

[00:26:52] That are uncomfortable

[00:26:52] You know

[00:26:53] To talk about race

[00:26:54] To talk about sexuality

[00:26:54] To talk about

[00:26:55] All these things

[00:26:56] That are really

[00:26:57] Hard to touch in general

[00:26:58] You know

[00:26:59] It kind of levels

[00:27:00] The playing field a bit

[00:27:01] And there's a bit

[00:27:02] More of a freedom in that

[00:27:04] So far on the podcast

[00:27:05] We've generally

[00:27:05] Interviewed people

[00:27:06] Kind of director level

[00:27:08] And up

[00:27:08] So it's really wonderful

[00:27:09] To have you here

[00:27:10] And I want to take

[00:27:11] That opportunity

[00:27:12] To ask you

[00:27:13] As an assistant producer

[00:27:15] And kind of

[00:27:16] Heading into producer

[00:27:17] Like how have you found

[00:27:18] Over the last four years

[00:27:20] Navigating your career here

[00:27:22] At quite a tricky

[00:27:24] Spiky time

[00:27:25] It's interesting

[00:27:25] I've had kind of

[00:27:26] Two sticky spiky times

[00:27:27] Because my career

[00:27:28] Basically started

[00:27:29] During COVID

[00:27:30] So halfway through

[00:27:31] My course at Imperial

[00:27:33] COVID hit

[00:27:34] And I packed a bag

[00:27:35] Thought I'd be gone

[00:27:36] For three weeks

[00:27:37] And was at home

[00:27:38] For a full year

[00:27:38] And had to

[00:27:39] Finish my course remotely

[00:27:41] And the Imperial course

[00:27:42] Is amazing

[00:27:43] Because it's a super

[00:27:43] Hands-on course

[00:27:44] And I missed out

[00:27:46] On a lot of that

[00:27:46] Which was

[00:27:47] You know

[00:27:47] Really sad

[00:27:48] And I kind of

[00:27:49] Have a chip on my shoulder

[00:27:50] About it

[00:27:50] Because you know

[00:27:51] I've definitely

[00:27:52] Operated a camera before

[00:27:53] I could you know

[00:27:54] Definitely do it

[00:27:55] But when people ask

[00:27:56] Do you shoot

[00:27:56] I say no

[00:27:57] Because I feel like

[00:27:59] I don't have

[00:27:59] I didn't have

[00:28:00] The formal training

[00:28:01] I don't know

[00:28:02] None of us have had

[00:28:03] The formal training

[00:28:03] I just want to be clear

[00:28:04] I didn't have any training

[00:28:06] You just do it

[00:28:08] Anyway carry on

[00:28:09] I'd just like to interject

[00:28:09] And say

[00:28:10] On the recent shoot

[00:28:10] We just did in South Africa

[00:28:12] Mariana did some fantastic

[00:28:13] Underwater filming

[00:28:16] Operating the camera

[00:28:16] In the Indian Ocean

[00:28:18] Yeah it was amazing

[00:28:19] So don't put yourself down

[00:28:20] Yeah

[00:28:20] Don't put yourself down

[00:28:20] I have to thank you

[00:28:21] For that honestly Alex

[00:28:22] Because I feel like

[00:28:23] That felt like

[00:28:23] Quite a pivotal moment

[00:28:24] It just meant

[00:28:25] I didn't have to do it

[00:28:25] Which was perfect

[00:28:27] But you literally were like

[00:28:28] Oh we're not doing anything else

[00:28:29] Jump in the water

[00:28:30] Take a camera

[00:28:31] I feel like

[00:28:32] That was tangential

[00:28:33] To your question though

[00:28:34] I think

[00:28:34] Yeah the

[00:28:35] That is this podcast

[00:28:36] This podcast is all about tangents

[00:28:38] It is a series of tangents

[00:28:39] It's more like

[00:28:40] Who tangented the tortoise

[00:28:41] Who tangented the tortoise

[00:28:49] You know

[00:28:49] It's honestly been

[00:28:51] Quite a pleasant experience

[00:28:52] I think

[00:28:53] Because I got set up

[00:28:54] So well in the beginning

[00:28:55] Just knowing

[00:28:56] The right people

[00:28:58] Who

[00:28:59] Kind of look at you

[00:29:00] And see potential

[00:29:01] And want to foster that

[00:29:03] And are very pro

[00:29:04] Like pushing people

[00:29:05] Forward in the industry

[00:29:07] I think

[00:29:07] My first job I had

[00:29:09] Was in COVID

[00:29:09] With a director

[00:29:11] Called Brian Leckie

[00:29:12] Who was amazing

[00:29:13] And he

[00:29:13] He actually worked on Mythbusters

[00:29:14] So he

[00:29:15] I kind of idolized him

[00:29:16] From the beginning

[00:29:16] I was like

[00:29:17] Wow that's amazing

[00:29:18] And he

[00:29:19] Kind of got me

[00:29:20] You know

[00:29:21] As location

[00:29:22] Assisting

[00:29:22] Just like running

[00:29:23] Getting coffees

[00:29:24] And then

[00:29:24] A couple months later

[00:29:25] He asked me to go

[00:29:26] On a two month

[00:29:27] Shoot with him

[00:29:28] And just travel around

[00:29:29] The US

[00:29:30] And it just

[00:29:31] You know

[00:29:32] I was like

[00:29:32] I don't know

[00:29:32] If I'm ready for that

[00:29:33] But yeah

[00:29:33] Let's do it

[00:29:34] And you

[00:29:35] It's kind of like

[00:29:36] What you're saying

[00:29:36] It's exactly that

[00:29:37] TV is so much about

[00:29:38] You know

[00:29:39] Going for it

[00:29:40] When the opportunity

[00:29:41] Is there

[00:29:41] And feeling a bit

[00:29:42] Uncomfortable

[00:29:42] But you know

[00:29:43] You get through it

[00:29:44] And you learn

[00:29:45] And move on

[00:29:46] And going forward

[00:29:47] From that

[00:29:48] He just kind of

[00:29:49] Passed me along

[00:29:50] To different people

[00:29:50] Along the way

[00:29:51] Who passed me

[00:29:52] To someone else

[00:29:52] Who you know

[00:29:53] Is all

[00:29:55] People who

[00:29:55] You know

[00:29:56] Didn't really know me

[00:29:57] That well

[00:29:58] But because I had

[00:29:59] That good recommendation

[00:30:01] Just kind of gave me

[00:30:02] A chance

[00:30:02] It's been four years

[00:30:04] Without a lot of struggles

[00:30:05] Up until this year

[00:30:06] I mean it's

[00:30:07] You know

[00:30:07] We've talked about it

[00:30:08] Or you've talked about it

[00:30:09] On this podcast

[00:30:10] Quite a bit

[00:30:10] Where it's been a tough year

[00:30:12] A lot of people

[00:30:13] Haven't had work for ages

[00:30:14] I had a gap of

[00:30:16] Three and a half months

[00:30:17] In the beginning

[00:30:18] Where I didn't have work

[00:30:18] And I'm kind of

[00:30:19] Stuck in another gap now

[00:30:21] And it's just kind of

[00:30:22] Leaning on those people

[00:30:23] That you've met

[00:30:24] For support

[00:30:26] The jobs that I have

[00:30:27] Gotten during this time

[00:30:27] Is again

[00:30:28] From those

[00:30:29] Really really lovely people

[00:30:31] And coming back

[00:30:31] To companies like

[00:30:32] You know

[00:30:33] We've all worked together

[00:30:33] At Tailsmith

[00:30:34] And they've been so great

[00:30:36] And you know

[00:30:37] They were the ones

[00:30:37] Who kind of

[00:30:38] Took me in

[00:30:39] And you know

[00:30:40] Gave me a job

[00:30:40] During this time

[00:30:41] And so

[00:30:42] Yeah

[00:30:42] It's

[00:30:43] It's been mixed

[00:30:44] But I think for the most part

[00:30:45] It's been

[00:30:46] Really really lovely

[00:30:47] Just because of the people

[00:30:49] I've met

[00:30:49] Purely

[00:30:50] For people who are

[00:30:51] Kind of coming into the industry

[00:30:52] Or trying to understand

[00:30:52] How it works

[00:30:53] Tell us a little bit about

[00:30:54] You know

[00:30:55] Learning storytelling

[00:30:56] Learning camera skills

[00:30:57] How do you do it

[00:30:58] When do you do it

[00:30:59] Have you found it easy

[00:31:00] Or difficult

[00:31:01] Yeah

[00:31:02] I think

[00:31:05] You honestly just learn

[00:31:06] A lot of it on the job

[00:31:07] And that was something

[00:31:08] A concept that

[00:31:09] Coming from a very

[00:31:10] Science-y background

[00:31:11] Where you know

[00:31:11] You do this step

[00:31:13] This step

[00:31:13] This step

[00:31:13] You know

[00:31:14] You take this course

[00:31:15] To learn these skills

[00:31:16] You take this course

[00:31:17] To learn these skills

[00:31:18] Once I got into TV

[00:31:19] It just became very ambiguous

[00:31:21] And I was very lost

[00:31:23] And honestly

[00:31:23] It's also

[00:31:24] I would say

[00:31:25] Ask so many questions

[00:31:27] Even if you're

[00:31:28] Going to be annoying

[00:31:28] I mean I know

[00:31:29] I've probably

[00:31:30] Asked questions

[00:31:30] At the wrong time

[00:31:31] And people get

[00:31:31] Quite annoyed

[00:31:32] But they usually

[00:31:33] Will say

[00:31:33] You know

[00:31:34] Ask me at a later time

[00:31:35] And people are

[00:31:36] So willing to help

[00:31:37] You know

[00:31:38] You'd be surprised

[00:31:39] You know

[00:31:39] I've met

[00:31:40] People on set

[00:31:41] That I thought

[00:31:41] Were kind of

[00:31:43] Standoffish

[00:31:43] And once you sit down

[00:31:44] And ask them a question

[00:31:45] They're actually

[00:31:46] So willing to help you

[00:31:47] And just because

[00:31:48] They might seem intimidating

[00:31:49] Just because they want

[00:31:50] To get the job done

[00:31:50] Doesn't mean they don't

[00:31:51] Want to be there

[00:31:52] To help you

[00:31:53] So ask questions

[00:31:54] Of everyone

[00:31:54] There are companies

[00:31:55] Out there

[00:31:55] Who are less good

[00:31:58] To work for than others

[00:31:59] And I just wondered

[00:31:59] How you have

[00:32:00] Or what advice

[00:32:02] You would give

[00:32:02] To someone who is

[00:32:03] Sort of coming up

[00:32:04] From underneath

[00:32:05] Where you are

[00:32:06] How do you go about

[00:32:08] Choosing the right job

[00:32:09] And kind of working out

[00:32:12] Who are the good people

[00:32:13] To work for

[00:32:13] And who might not be

[00:32:15] And whether a job

[00:32:16] Is going to be

[00:32:16] A pleasant one

[00:32:17] Or an unpleasant one

[00:32:18] Oh that is such

[00:32:19] An important question

[00:32:20] Especially because

[00:32:21] I find myself

[00:32:21] Quite susceptible

[00:32:22] To those kinds of things

[00:32:23] I feel like I'm still

[00:32:24] A very wide-eyed

[00:32:24] Naive person

[00:32:26] Because I want to

[00:32:26] Believe the best in people

[00:32:28] But it's true

[00:32:29] You know

[00:32:29] Working in this industry

[00:32:30] You have to be

[00:32:31] Very careful

[00:32:32] Because people

[00:32:32] Will take advantage

[00:32:33] Of that

[00:32:34] People are constantly

[00:32:35] Trying to make TV

[00:32:36] For less and less money

[00:32:37] And if they can get

[00:32:39] Loads out of you

[00:32:39] Without compensating you

[00:32:40] Probably they will

[00:32:41] Not every company

[00:32:42] But there are people

[00:32:43] Out there

[00:32:44] So honestly

[00:32:46] Rely

[00:32:46] Like talk

[00:32:48] Talk to people

[00:32:48] Talk to people

[00:32:49] About your rates

[00:32:50] Talk to people

[00:32:51] About their experiences

[00:32:51] At companies

[00:32:52] You know

[00:32:53] Some people are just

[00:32:54] Uncomfortable about

[00:32:55] Asking questions

[00:32:56] About that kind of stuff

[00:32:56] Because they don't

[00:32:57] Want to come off

[00:32:57] As asking too many questions

[00:32:59] Or come off as

[00:33:00] Starting drama

[00:33:01] Or something

[00:33:02] Or being difficult

[00:33:02] But like

[00:33:03] Knowledge really is power

[00:33:04] So anybody

[00:33:06] You've worked with

[00:33:06] Before just

[00:33:07] Suss out

[00:33:08] You know

[00:33:08] Oh have you been

[00:33:09] In this company

[00:33:10] What do you think

[00:33:10] What's the exec like

[00:33:11] You know

[00:33:11] What was your experience like

[00:33:13] How did they negotiate

[00:33:14] Your rates

[00:33:15] Oh my gosh

[00:33:16] Honestly

[00:33:17] Like the amount

[00:33:18] Of times that

[00:33:19] You speak to

[00:33:20] Different people

[00:33:20] Who have been

[00:33:21] You know

[00:33:22] Kind of done over

[00:33:23] On their rates

[00:33:23] Because their goodwill

[00:33:25] Has been taken advantage of

[00:33:26] You've just got to

[00:33:27] Talk to people

[00:33:28] And learn what

[00:33:29] A fair rate is

[00:33:30] You know

[00:33:30] And don't be scared

[00:33:31] To walk away from a job

[00:33:33] Because if they really

[00:33:34] Need you

[00:33:34] They'll you know

[00:33:35] They'll make it work

[00:33:36] I think sadly

[00:33:37] That on the rate point

[00:33:39] I think that happens

[00:33:39] At every level

[00:33:40] At every level

[00:33:41] I was going to say

[00:33:41] Yeah

[00:33:41] It's happened to me

[00:33:42] In the last few years

[00:33:43] It has happened to

[00:33:45] You know

[00:33:45] Very senior DOPs

[00:33:47] That I know

[00:33:47] Even this year

[00:33:49] But yeah

[00:33:49] Especially this year

[00:33:50] I feel like

[00:33:51] I got taken for a ride

[00:33:52] This year

[00:33:52] Always know your worth

[00:33:53] Absolutely

[00:33:54] You know

[00:33:54] And I think

[00:33:55] Don't let people

[00:33:57] Trick you

[00:33:58] Or convince you

[00:33:59] That we are

[00:34:01] So very very lucky

[00:34:02] To work in this

[00:34:03] Wonderfully privileged industry

[00:34:04] I hate that

[00:34:06] And you're so lucky

[00:34:07] To work for us

[00:34:08] On this show

[00:34:10] Yeah

[00:34:10] It's like

[00:34:11] People would be dying

[00:34:12] To be in your position

[00:34:13] Exactly

[00:34:13] It's the ultimate gaslighting

[00:34:15] What is this

[00:34:16] Like

[00:34:16] Oh god it winds me up so much

[00:34:18] It really does

[00:34:19] Because I was the person

[00:34:20] Going into this career

[00:34:21] Who was like

[00:34:22] You're so right

[00:34:22] I would never have done

[00:34:24] This otherwise

[00:34:24] Oh you know

[00:34:26] We've all been

[00:34:26] We've all been

[00:34:27] Absolutely

[00:34:27] Absolutely

[00:34:29] You've just really

[00:34:30] Got to have your

[00:34:30] What's about you

[00:34:31] And you know

[00:34:31] Don't feel ashamed

[00:34:32] If it does happen

[00:34:33] Because you know

[00:34:34] You learn from it

[00:34:35] And life goes on

[00:34:36] You feel really silly

[00:34:37] But you know

[00:34:38] It happens

[00:34:39] That's the thing

[00:34:41] Daylight's fading

[00:34:42] And this next test

[00:34:43] Is pretty much

[00:34:45] Make or break

[00:34:46] This one's gonna work

[00:34:50] I hope

[00:34:50] Up on six

[00:34:53] With six engines

[00:34:55] Six hoses

[00:34:56] Come on ladies

[00:34:58] Up up up

[00:34:59] And no motor

[00:35:01] The car finally takes flight

[00:35:03] And isn't this a thing of beauty

[00:35:16] Fifteen feet high

[00:35:18] For a full 45 seconds

[00:35:20] Rocking cars start up

[00:35:34] A little rough

[00:35:35] But once they're airborne

[00:35:36] They're beautiful

[00:35:38] Just to bring it back

[00:35:39] To the program briefly

[00:35:40] Watching it back now

[00:35:44] Kind of knowing

[00:35:45] What you know

[00:35:46] Did you watch it

[00:35:48] And think about

[00:35:49] The structure

[00:35:50] Of the program

[00:35:51] How they

[00:35:53] Explained the science

[00:35:54] Yeah

[00:35:55] The way they used

[00:35:57] Different kinds of

[00:35:58] Shots

[00:35:59] And different kind of

[00:36:00] Storytelling techniques

[00:36:01] To get you through

[00:36:02] Any of the

[00:36:02] What might be

[00:36:03] Slower bits of science

[00:36:04] To get to the explosions

[00:36:05] Did you think about

[00:36:07] Any of that

[00:36:07] When you were watching it

[00:36:08] Or were you just like

[00:36:09] This is so cool

[00:36:10] I just love it

[00:36:11] Yeah

[00:36:12] Since working in TV

[00:36:13] I can't watch

[00:36:14] Any kind of TV now

[00:36:16] Without picking it apart

[00:36:17] And like

[00:36:18] You know

[00:36:19] Trying to imagine

[00:36:20] What it was like

[00:36:21] Making it

[00:36:21] And especially with this show

[00:36:23] If anything

[00:36:24] It's just grown

[00:36:25] My admiration

[00:36:26] For the show

[00:36:26] They have such a tight

[00:36:27] You know

[00:36:28] From the sounds

[00:36:29] They use

[00:36:30] The soundtracks

[00:36:30] The bits of music

[00:36:32] The sound effects

[00:36:33] They use

[00:36:33] It all fits

[00:36:35] Into this really tight theme

[00:36:36] That just kind of

[00:36:37] Signals to the viewer

[00:36:38] Okay

[00:36:38] Now we're going to

[00:36:40] Go into a bit

[00:36:41] Of science

[00:36:42] They have kind of

[00:36:42] A specific soundbite

[00:36:43] For that

[00:36:44] That sounds a bit

[00:36:44] Like clinky clanky

[00:36:45] Kind of

[00:36:46] Beep boop boppy music

[00:36:47] Which I love

[00:36:48] It's that kind of

[00:36:49] Like brainwave music

[00:36:51] The pressure builds

[00:36:53] Back at M5

[00:36:54] As they start designing

[00:36:55] The full scale version

[00:36:56] We don't need something

[00:36:57] As complex as that

[00:36:58] We can have something

[00:36:59] Like

[00:37:01] MPTs

[00:37:01] Pipe fittings

[00:37:02] To have a tattritch

[00:37:03] Pipe fitting

[00:37:04] There so your hose

[00:37:05] Comes in

[00:37:05] And then

[00:37:07] A nipple

[00:37:08] A PSI

[00:37:09] Yeah

[00:37:09] What do we gain

[00:37:10] And what do we lose

[00:37:11] If

[00:37:11] You know

[00:37:13] When something

[00:37:13] Bad has gone on

[00:37:14] There's a bit of

[00:37:15] You know

[00:37:16] And their

[00:37:16] Experiment isn't working

[00:37:18] They have kind of

[00:37:19] That auditory cue

[00:37:20] Of kind of like

[00:37:20] A more somber

[00:37:21] Kind of intense

[00:37:22] Set of music

[00:37:23] So I think that

[00:37:25] Kind of just

[00:37:25] Almost primes you

[00:37:26] For you know

[00:37:27] Different segments

[00:37:28] Of the show

[00:37:29] What they do

[00:37:30] On some of the

[00:37:31] More complex sciences

[00:37:32] They either use

[00:37:33] Graphics

[00:37:33] Which

[00:37:34] They do it in a way

[00:37:35] That's quite like

[00:37:36] It doesn't look

[00:37:37] Super high budget

[00:37:39] But it works

[00:37:40] You know

[00:37:40] It's quirky

[00:37:41] It's funny

[00:37:41] It's simple

[00:37:42] And it gives it a flavor

[00:37:43] And they also

[00:37:45] Kind of supplement

[00:37:46] That with these

[00:37:47] The beginning

[00:37:48] Of every episode

[00:37:49] And the beginning

[00:37:49] Of every myth

[00:37:50] They have this

[00:37:50] Big blue piece

[00:37:51] Of paper

[00:37:51] And a silver

[00:37:52] Sharpie

[00:37:52] And they kind of

[00:37:53] Do like a fast

[00:37:54] Time lapse

[00:37:55] Of somebody scribbling

[00:37:56] Out the title

[00:37:57] And they'll sometimes

[00:37:58] Use that

[00:37:59] Especially in the

[00:37:59] Earlier seasons

[00:38:00] To explain scientific

[00:38:01] Concepts

[00:38:02] So you know

[00:38:02] They draw the graphs

[00:38:03] They show the mechanisms

[00:38:04] And do calculations

[00:38:05] On it

[00:38:06] So it makes it

[00:38:07] Really easy

[00:38:07] To follow a lot

[00:38:08] Of the

[00:38:09] Especially physics

[00:38:10] Concepts

[00:38:10] Because a lot

[00:38:11] Of it is about

[00:38:11] You know

[00:38:12] It's a lot

[00:38:13] Of engineering

[00:38:13] In physics

[00:38:14] It is

[00:38:14] They talk about it

[00:38:16] Unashamedly

[00:38:17] Yeah

[00:38:18] And they

[00:38:18] What I loved

[00:38:19] Is I read about

[00:38:20] How

[00:38:21] So there are

[00:38:22] A lot of different

[00:38:22] Crews worked

[00:38:23] Across the series

[00:38:24] And there was

[00:38:24] One of the directors

[00:38:25] Specifically

[00:38:26] They mentioned

[00:38:27] What was her name

[00:38:29] Alice

[00:38:29] They mentioned

[00:38:30] In one of these

[00:38:31] Clips on Adam Savage's

[00:38:32] YouTube channel

[00:38:33] And they were

[00:38:34] Talking about

[00:38:35] How she

[00:38:36] Wouldn't let

[00:38:36] Them

[00:38:38] Like stop

[00:38:39] Recording the piece

[00:38:39] To camera

[00:38:40] Until she got it

[00:38:41] Really

[00:38:41] She's like

[00:38:42] No you've got

[00:38:42] To explain it

[00:38:43] In a different way

[00:38:43] You've got to

[00:38:44] Explain it

[00:38:44] A different way

[00:38:44] And so

[00:38:45] What I took

[00:38:46] From that

[00:38:46] Is that

[00:38:47] They're not

[00:38:47] Trying to

[00:38:47] Dumb down

[00:38:48] They're just

[00:38:48] Trying to make

[00:38:48] Sure things

[00:38:49] Are explained

[00:38:49] Properly

[00:38:50] But also

[00:38:51] Things must be

[00:38:52] So lively

[00:38:53] Yeah

[00:38:54] Coming into

[00:38:54] This idea

[00:38:55] You were talking

[00:38:56] About of

[00:38:56] Chaos

[00:38:57] Things are so

[00:38:58] Lively and chaotic

[00:38:59] It makes it

[00:39:00] Feel so alive

[00:39:01] Because they're

[00:39:01] Doing it on camera

[00:39:02] Then

[00:39:03] Yes

[00:39:03] In the moment

[00:39:03] For the show

[00:39:04] Bangor to Theory

[00:39:04] I worked on

[00:39:06] We would change

[00:39:07] Things but we

[00:39:08] Would script

[00:39:08] Everything up

[00:39:09] Beforehand

[00:39:09] And it would

[00:39:10] Have gone through

[00:39:10] Several passes

[00:39:11] With different

[00:39:12] People on the team

[00:39:13] You know

[00:39:13] Going higher up

[00:39:14] To the execs

[00:39:14] To make sure

[00:39:15] The science was

[00:39:16] Right

[00:39:16] And that we

[00:39:17] Are explaining

[00:39:18] It in a good way

[00:39:19] Whereas it felt

[00:39:19] Like on that show

[00:39:20] It felt so much

[00:39:21] More alive

[00:39:21] Because maybe

[00:39:23] They were doing

[00:39:23] It more in the

[00:39:24] Moment

[00:39:24] Yeah

[00:39:25] Yeah

[00:39:25] It's that sense

[00:39:27] Of immediacy

[00:39:27] Where you know

[00:39:28] Even in this

[00:39:29] This episode

[00:39:29] That we're talking

[00:39:30] About today

[00:39:30] Is you know

[00:39:31] Adam's explaining

[00:39:32] How the

[00:39:34] It's a myth

[00:39:35] About this

[00:39:36] This viral video

[00:39:37] Of a car

[00:39:37] That's being lifted

[00:39:38] By like

[00:39:38] I don't know

[00:39:39] How many different

[00:39:40] Fire hoses

[00:39:41] Just the pressure

[00:39:42] Of the water

[00:39:43] Is lifting this car

[00:39:44] Into the air

[00:39:44] And it's hovering

[00:39:46] There

[00:39:47] Seems like a nightmare

[00:39:48] To engineer

[00:39:49] But they go ahead

[00:39:50] And do it

[00:39:50] And they explain

[00:39:51] You know

[00:39:51] Well each nozzle

[00:39:52] Has to produce

[00:39:53] This certain amount

[00:39:54] Of force

[00:39:54] To be able

[00:39:55] To get the car

[00:39:55] Up into the air

[00:39:56] And the arrangement

[00:39:58] Of the nozzles

[00:39:58] Has to be so

[00:39:59] That you know

[00:40:00] This one points

[00:40:00] This way

[00:40:01] To provide that stability

[00:40:02] And there's just

[00:40:03] A sequence

[00:40:04] Where Adam's like

[00:40:05] The water's gonna run down

[00:40:06] This hose here

[00:40:07] And it splits here

[00:40:08] And it goes into

[00:40:09] This direction

[00:40:09] And this direction

[00:40:10] You know

[00:40:10] And he's in the moment

[00:40:12] Like really engaging

[00:40:14] It's just him

[00:40:15] Kind of carrying it

[00:40:16] It's that character

[00:40:16] That enthusiasm

[00:40:17] That you know

[00:40:19] Grabs your attention

[00:40:20] And makes you

[00:40:23] Feel

[00:40:24] I don't know

[00:40:24] That you can understand

[00:40:25] Anything that he says

[00:40:26] Because he just

[00:40:26] He puts it in a way

[00:40:27] That you know

[00:40:28] Is infectious

[00:40:29] It's not

[00:40:30] It's not like

[00:40:31] Overly authoritative science

[00:40:33] It's not

[00:40:34] Dumbing it down

[00:40:35] To a very condescending level

[00:40:36] It's just

[00:40:37] Very much

[00:40:39] Inviting the audience

[00:40:40] To take part in it

[00:40:41] You know

[00:40:42] It's that

[00:40:42] Welcome in

[00:40:43] I want to show you this

[00:40:44] I want to tell you

[00:40:45] What this is like

[00:40:45] It's so sick

[00:40:47] And I'm gonna teach you why

[00:40:48] You know

[00:40:48] So having had the chance

[00:40:51] To watch this back

[00:40:52] Whether you felt it

[00:40:53] Sort of stood up

[00:40:54] To the test of time

[00:40:55] And also

[00:40:56] What it means to you

[00:40:57] Oh god

[00:40:58] I think it absolutely

[00:40:58] Stands the test of time

[00:41:00] I to this day

[00:41:01] Think that that is

[00:41:01] The best science format

[00:41:03] Ever

[00:41:04] And it really annoys me

[00:41:06] That nobody's really

[00:41:07] Caught on and done it again

[00:41:08] And the second it does happen

[00:41:10] I want to be on that production

[00:41:11] But that format

[00:41:12] Is just so

[00:41:13] I don't know

[00:41:14] For someone like me

[00:41:15] Who just has a hard time

[00:41:16] Sitting still

[00:41:17] And needs a lot of

[00:41:18] Chaos to engage me

[00:41:20] What it means to me

[00:41:21] Was

[00:41:23] Just

[00:41:24] Watching it

[00:41:24] Really made me feel like

[00:41:26] You know

[00:41:27] I'm watching this show

[00:41:28] That's being produced

[00:41:29] 30 to 45 minutes away

[00:41:30] From me

[00:41:32] And

[00:41:32] All these really cool people

[00:41:34] Who

[00:41:34] You know

[00:41:35] Seem like pretty normal people

[00:41:36] I mean especially

[00:41:37] Watching somebody like Carrie

[00:41:38] Who is

[00:41:38] You know

[00:41:39] The only

[00:41:40] Permanent woman

[00:41:41] On that show

[00:41:42] I mean they had other

[00:41:42] Kind of Scotty

[00:41:43] And you know

[00:41:44] A couple different people

[00:41:46] Featured in

[00:41:46] But

[00:41:46] Just watching her

[00:41:48] Take these heavy duty tools

[00:41:50] To like

[00:41:50] Cut shit apart

[00:41:51] And like make things

[00:41:52] And just hang there

[00:41:54] With everyone else

[00:41:55] She's doing all the heavy lifting

[00:41:56] She's doing all the mechanical stuff

[00:41:58] She's

[00:41:58] You know

[00:41:59] And she's explaining the science

[00:42:00] It's fun and engaging

[00:42:01] And

[00:42:02] So good to watch

[00:42:03] Just made me feel like

[00:42:04] You know

[00:42:05] A little girl

[00:42:05] Being like

[00:42:06] Yeah absolutely

[00:42:06] Not even a question

[00:42:07] I can do that

[00:42:08] There was never a doubt in my mind

[00:42:09] That I could

[00:42:10] One day be one of those

[00:42:11] People doing science

[00:42:13] Getting in the muck

[00:42:14] Getting dirty

[00:42:14] Getting

[00:42:15] You know

[00:42:16] Right there in the chaos of things

[00:42:17] And it's that enthusiasm

[00:42:19] That really pushed me

[00:42:20] To

[00:42:20] See how cool science is

[00:42:22] And it's something that I think

[00:42:23] Pushes me through a lot of jobs today

[00:42:24] And

[00:42:25] I'd like to think

[00:42:26] Is something that makes me

[00:42:27] Quite fun to work with

[00:42:28] Because I think

[00:42:29] I just get swept up

[00:42:29] In those moments

[00:42:30] And

[00:42:30] And it's okay to get swept up

[00:42:32] In those moments

[00:42:32] Because that's

[00:42:33] You know

[00:42:34] What makes good TV

[00:42:35] And brings people in

[00:42:37] I mean that's a great legacy

[00:42:38] For a TV show isn't it

[00:42:39] Absolutely

[00:42:40] Yeah

[00:42:40] Fantastic

[00:42:41] Thank you for sharing it

[00:42:42] Thank you

[00:42:43] Aw thank you for having me

[00:42:46] It's been so much fun

[00:42:52] This whole internet thing

[00:42:53] Is actually pretty nifty

[00:42:54] I thought that you'd like it

[00:42:56] It's almost as good

[00:42:57] As the telephone

[00:42:58] And you know

[00:42:59] I actually had a lot of fun

[00:43:01] On these viral videos

[00:43:02] So did I

[00:43:03] You know

[00:43:03] I was most impressed

[00:43:04] That everything we all tested

[00:43:06] Turned out to be

[00:43:07] Plausible or confirmed

[00:43:08] Honestly

[00:43:08] I can't remember

[00:43:09] The last time that happened

[00:43:10] There's plenty more

[00:43:11] Where that came from

[00:43:12] Oh yeah

[00:43:13] I smell a sequel
